MAGIC Fund is a $30M early-stage fund built by founders backing other founders. MAGIC was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.

Their thesis at MAGIC is that smaller funds run by diverse founders perform best at early-stage investing (pre-seed/seed). They’re a fund of micro-funds run by repeat founders who possess strong expertise in specific industries and geographies, with a keen focus on Fintech, Healthcare, Saas and emerging markets.

They are a group of fifteen partners who invest across 5 key markets: US & Canada, South-East Asia, India, Africa, Europe and Latin America. They work with founders who are committed to building the leading companies across different sectors and geographies.

About the Role

They are looking to hire a Senior Venture Associate who will be responsible for leading their Deals & Research team at MAGIC. This team is responsible for managing all deals and research activities alongside their general partners. The team will work with general partners to source deals, speak with founders, conduct due diligence, create investment memos and support the founders post-investment. You will be reporting to the Operating Partner.

What do you need to be considered successful?

  • Facilitate the deal sourcing process by identifying and/or screening investment opportunities and their alignment with their investment thesis alongside your team of analysts
  • Create and manage the process and system for tracking all deal activity across the fund
  • Oversee the creation of systems for optimizing the efficiency of our deal-making process at MAGIC
  • Oversee conducting due diligence activities such as market sizing, industry and sector analysis, competitive positioning, technical feasibility, and other areas critical to investment evaluation alongside general partners
  • Manage the creation of investment memos that summarize the opportunity, diligence findings, strengths, and risks for investments
  • Work closely with their Operations and Data to manage all data gathered across the fund and leverage insights generated to improve processes
  • Oversee portfolio management and monitoring efforts as well as ad-hoc value-add initiatives around strategy, operations, financing, and more
  • Optimize system for gathering updates from portfolio companies and extracting insights to guide portfolio support and investment focus
  • Oversee research activity at the fund for their focus sectors and regions
  • Oversee the authoring a variety of written materials including investment memos, sectoral research, venture capital sector reports and more
  • Enhance the MAGIC Fund brand through social media, PR support, and other branding efforts

How important are you to the bottom line?

Your work will involve:

  • Design the process for managing the deals & research team that supports their 10 investment cohorts at MAGIC
  • Manage a team of analysts to source deals, evaluate companies, prepare investment memos and support portfolio companies
  • Manage research for the different sectors and regions they invest in as a fund
  • Hands-on involvement in the deals and research process

What do you need to have done In your career?

  • Experience in Venture Capital, Private Equity, Finance, Accelerator, Startup Support sectors preferred
  • Previous experience participating in due diligence and evaluation of startups
  • Some experience working with entrepreneurs and founders
  • An understanding of the technology sector and venture capital
  • Self-guided with high levels of initiative
  • Sense of urgency, ability to manage multiple priorities. Excellent organizational skills
  • Great written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to summarize and synthesize information succinctly
  • Highly curious, continuous learner 
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills 
  • “Can do” entrepreneurial attitude and a propensity to figure out a way to get things done, no matter the obstacles.
